Asher Roth Speaks On His Def Jam Debut | News

After a host of CMJ performances last week, Pennsylvania rapper Asher Roth is putting the final touches on his to-be-titled sophomore set, the follow-up to his somewhat maligned debut, 2009′s Asleep in the Bread Aisle. But don’t count Roth out, as he’s since dipped back into the underground to release a series of more uncompromising mixtapes (including a top collaboration with Action Bronson which saw the Flushing foodie warning Roth’s haters “don’t ever say a fuckin’ thing about the homie”), and emerging to snag a deal with Def Jam. After revealing that his first project for the label won’t be titled Is This Too Orange?, Hive called up Asher to get the inside scoop on how he’s going about renaming the project, the creative process of supping tequila in the studio with Organized Noize, and the influence of Paul Simon and R Kelly on the album.

Hello, how are you doing?

Bonjour!

Do you speak French?

Nah. [Says a short sentence in French.] That’s about it.

So there’s no chance of you rapping in French on the new album?

Nah, I need to do that though. That’d be real!

Have you come up with a new title for the album yet?

I can’t reveal the title of it yet. I wish I could. We’re getting there. It was tentatively titled Is This Too Orange?, but that’s no longer the title out of respect to Frank Ocean. We’re re-energizing it with something brand new and we’ll announce it in a couple of weeks.

Do you have the title confirmed then?

I’m deciding between two or three different ideas. It’s just a matter of getting everybody on the same page.

What’s the most important thing to consider when coming up with an album title?

I learned a valuable lesson with a mixtape I put out called Seared Foie Gras With Quince and Cranberry. Although some people were like, “That’s the most genius title ever!” and that makes you feel like you’re really smart, it actually wasn’t a smart thing to do when the majority of people can’t pronounce it. So I think the most important thing with a title is to try to do something concise and that people can actually pronounce.

Just ask Asher Roth, whose first decidedly non-Hip Hop look in cargo shorts and flip flops (gasp…Chancletas!) earned him the fate of being lumped together with Sam Adams and other “Frat Rap” acts. It probably didn’t help things that HipHopDX gave his debut Asleep In The Bread Isle a rating of two out of five. Suffice it to say, as the Notorious B.I.G. once rhymed, “Things Done Changed.”

The hair is longer; his music is pleasantly all over the place. When we ran into Asher Roth in Austin, Texas during South By Southwest his binge drinking consisted of water, and the only green he was taking to the face was in the form of a chicken Caesar salad. The song responsible for shaping many of our initial impressions of Asher Roth, 2009’s “I Love College” went platinum and hit the number 12 spot on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 singles chart. His label, Loud/SRC has since struck a partnership with Def Jam, yet he hasn’t reached higher than the number 79 spot since (2010’s “G.R.I.N.D.”), and he seems perfectly cool with that.

In short, most of us were probably a bit quick to judge. But, to be fair, the guy behind Pabst & Jazz isn’t the same person or emcee he was in 2009.

HipHopDX: Everyone is focused on this new deal with Def Jam. What does it mean to you to be on this historic label with the lineage of Slick Rick, LL Cool J and Jay-Z?

Asher Roth: What’s crazy for me is that I’m coming from [Steve] Rifkind with Loud Records. So it’s like those are my two patches—Def Jam and Loud. It’s like “Do you know how much ground that covers? Oh my god.” It didn’t really hit me at first. I was just like, “Ah. Major label...I’m on a major label.” Then I copped the 25 Years of Def Jam book with all the pictures. So I’m sitting there looking through it like, “Wow…what a special time.”

Obviously the record industry and labels are a little tainted right now in 2012. With the Internet coming on and going full force, major labels are kind of pulling in the reigns with music and the sale of it. There’s kind of a control battle, and it causes people to look at major labels kind of cockeyed and ask, “Where’s your place in 2012 and beyond.” But with Def Jam you just kind of look through and you see the history of Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and it’s like, “Oh my god. This is what it’s all about.” You see Lyor Cohen with the phone in his hand…he’s got the Zack Morris phone all the time. And it’s just really artist-friendly executives and a label that wants to put good, honest music out for the culture.

And that’s really what Def Jam embodies for me—the culture. It was New York in the ‘80’s. I just think, right now, we’re getting back to that. We’re getting back to putting out real, genuine, honest music for people and what’s going on right now. I kind of talk about it a lot, and especially in Hip Hop. Obviously Rock and Roll and Punk are very expressive about culture and society. But Hip Hop has always been like, “This is what’s going on right now, and this is how we feel.”

From the ‘90’s through the first part of the 2000’s it was kind of bling bling. There was a lot of making money, which was fine, because Hip Hop was making a lot of money. But we kind of lost that, “Hey this is what’s going on right now, and this is how we feel.”

So I’m excited because I feel like Def Jam is a good place to call home when getting back to that feeling of, “The world’s kind of crazy, so let’s use Hip Hop as a tool to get everybody to the table.”

DX: Creatively, you’ve hit a stride that is winning a lot of fans. Tell me how that goes on an artist first label looking at a sophomore album.

Asher Roth: It’s tough, because to me I don’t wanna get caught up in all the analyzing—like what people expect or how so-and-so views me. It’s been great because with the Rawth EP or Pabst & Jazz, both my fans and my new fans are actually witnessing progression. I think that’s the most important thing, because it’s like they’re growing up with me. I’m just figuring this shit out, because I got cast into it. I put out a mixtape, and the next thing you know, I’m on the cover of XXL. That’s a lot. In the art world, you’re coming out with something and you’re being met with just 360 degrees of judgment and criticism. You have people saying, “I could do that…blah, blah, blah” and all this other stuff. So I think you’ve really got to scale it back. Obviously when you’re first in, it’s a lot of criticism and a lot of stimuli. You can start nitpicking at yourself, like, “Am I pretty enough?” and that whole kind of American Beauty thing.

But you just kind of scale back and realize what’s important to you and prioritize. Then it’s like, “Okay. I just want to make music that I like.” And in direct relation, your fans are gonna like what you like. I’ve learned that, and I think that’s what you’re starting to hear. I’m just making music that I’m comfortable with and proud of. And the direct relation is my fans feeling like, “Hey I can really relate to Asher. I feel like he’s in a good place right now.”

DX: In five years, you’ve managed to build up a rather diverse catalogue. Does your live show change from night to night…venue to venue?

Asher Roth: Yeah, absolutely. I hate to put my secret out there, but my live show is my everything. That’s why I root for [Big] K.R.I.T. so hard and [A$AP] Rocky. Those guys are not only making good music, but they also put on a hell of a show. I was talking to Alison about putting together a splash page for when we go city-to-city, because music is regional. You can see trap music in the South that doesn’t impact Maine. So we want to be able to say, “Hey we’re in Dallas. Here’s my discography. Vote for which songs you want to hear live.” So I’m always trying to figure out how to get the fans involved and have them control the experience.

That’s what’s really cool about music now. With my project, as an outsider looking in and a fan, you get to control the experience. A lot of times, an artist will just say, “No, this is the experience. This is the album cover, and these are the 12 songs in this order.” I’m more about asking what songs you want to hear and what order fans want to hear them in. You can pick your own album cover or draw your own album cover. We’re just trying to have some fun and let the fans be a part of it. To be honest with you, without them this doesn’t even exist.

DX: You mentioned Nottz, and every time we speak to him he sings your praises. Tell me about that relationship?

Asher Roth: I don’t even know how Nottz and I met. I just woke up one day, and I was on a leather couch in Virginia above a tattoo shop. It’s just one of those journey of life or fate things. Who would’ve ever thought, “Let’s get Asher Roth and Nottz in the same room?” But it’s one of those things that you can’t pinpoint or script. Who knows why he and I click? I don’t know if it’s an astrology thing where he’s a Gemini or something and we’re compatible. But to me, he just sticks to the script. He knows what he wants to do, and he does it well. He knows where he comes from, and he’s progressing too.

We’re doing another tape called Rawther. Travis Barker is on the drums, and it’s just like so stupid. He’s trying all these new things and messing around. Obviously, he’s a music guy. So he’s sampling all this Indie Rock—whether it be White Stripes or all this other stuff. It’s so dope to be with somebody I got in so early with when I was a little punk with my hair short and cargo shorts on. I was just kind of moving around, and Nottz saw something in me and told me to keep going. He’s not gonna talk your ear off. He’s just like, “Let’s go.” He’s all work, but he’s the man. He’s so funny and talks so much shit, but he’s not gonna put it all out there for you. I think that’s what’s so amazing about Nottz, because there’s still a little mystery involved with him. It’s not like he has his own clothing line or anything. He just does great Hip Hop music, and I’m excited for him because he’s starting to branch out. The new stuff that we’re doing is…I don’t even know if you can classify it as Hip Hop. It’s almost Rock music that’s coming from the boom bap, and there’s elements of psychedelic trip Rock [laughs]. I don’t even know. Nottz is such a mad scientist.

And the same goes for the other people I’ve been working with. It’s just creative people wanting to do some cool stuff and try new things.

From Complex Sports:

Asher Roth has never been one to shy away from his love of sports. From shouting out Marcus Allen, Fred Biletnikoff, and Ed McCaffrey on his track "I'm Eddy" to likening himself to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith in an article for ESPN, Asher lives and dies with his teams. He understands how sports can control people's lives and emotion in an infuriating way.

Nothing captures the passion of the sports world quite like an NCAA March Madness tournament. The upsets, the Cinderella stories and the buzzer-beaters all contribute to make for an unreal month of basketball. Asher took that craziness and applied it to a live performance tour that he rightfully dubbed the Final Four Tour. Over the past month and a half, he's hit 11 NCAA tournament campuses, coming to a close today in New Orleans, where the Final Four is held this year. Asher took a minute to talk to Complex about the tour and give us his Final Four picks for this weekend.

Shazam Meets...Asher Roth | News

For anyone who’s ever been to SXSW, you’ll know that trying to dash between meetings in the Texan heat can be tricky; especially when your GPS has decided to direct you ten minutes in the wrong direction. While we managed to secure a valuable few minutes of Asher Roth’s crazy schedule, it was touch and go whether we’d make it or not. With the help of a local taxi driver, we arrived to find Asher huddled unassumingly in the corner of a Texan sports bar, the Def Jam signed rapper seemed relaxed and perfectly at ease with our time keeping.

While the ‘I Love College’ singer, grabbed some much needed SXSW sustenance, we discussed his experiences of the festival, the pressure of delivering ‘Is This Too Orange?’ and what happened when he decamped to Miami for a week, to work with Pharrell Williams.

How are you finding SXSW?

This is my third one. Last time I was here, I had to feel it out and make the mistakes. I tried doing too much. But then you realise, you have to plan it out. This year has been pretty cool, last night we hosted a karaoke party so we were drinking whisky and chilling. South By is cool, now it’s my 3rd one and I’m friendly with a lot of people performing, it’s a hangout more than it is work; it’s good to have that feeling.

So you’ve previously pushed yourself too far at things like this?

Oh totally, like doing four shows a day and having to be over one side of town then the other. It gets extremely tiring if you don’t know what you’re doing. There’s so much to do and you want to do it all, but you’ve just gotta prioritise. I think that’s like a metaphor for my whole career in general you know? Getting back to the drawing board and prioritising what’s important.

For someone who’s never been to SXSW, how would you describe it?

It’s a sh*t show man (laughs). There’s just a lot going on, you’ve got 6th St which is just bars and drinking and music. That’s the best way to explain South by, drinks and music. They tell you it’s best to do things in moderation, but it’s very hard to do SXSW in moderation, because it’s all over the place. But, it’s a lot of fun and if you’re with the right people and you’re into discovery? SXSW is the place to find some really cool stuff.

So your new album, ‘Is This Too Orange?’ when can we hear it?

We’re really shooting for a May release date, because it’s so warm. If we don’t release it in May, at the latest June, we’d be really screwing up.

What happened with the album title, we heard you’re were all set to go with ‘The Spaghetti Tree’?

We’re always working and sometimes things take on a life of their own. We went down to see Pharrell (Williams) down in Miami and worked with him for 11 days and came up with a bunch of tracks that became a body of work called ‘The Spaghetti Tree’. Obviously when people interview you, you can only talk about what’s going on at that moment. Then with the internet, they take something and run with it and that’s how it is. But it was just what was going on at the time; it was never going to be an official release.

You also released several mixtapes over the last few years. Was that just to get some new tracks out there to the fans?

We have so many with the outlets with direct to fan and the internet, its tough putting out music with a major label or organisation; it takes time. Some of the tracks on ‘Is This Too Orange’ are almost a year old. It takes a while to put that together (with a major label). But, we can’t wait that long! My job is to make music and I can’t really wait around or ask for permission. We have the Twitters, Facebooks, Tumblrs and blogs that are extremely friendly with us and want to put our music up all the time. So we need to provide content to our fans, so rather than wait to put out studio albums we give them something and say ‘hey, come to a show’. So that’s what the tapes are about, plus it keeps me fresh; you gotta work the muscle, work the brain.

Mixtapes have become a huge movement in modern hip hop, but it seems to be limited to the genre; why don’t, say, indie bands do the same thing?

I think it’s one of those outlet things, its promotion for us. We have an opportunity to do what we feel like doing. Hip hop has always been very self-promotional, I think Lil’ Wayne has done it best; just flooding the market with content and songs and having stuff out there. I think it’s just seeing how the music biz is operating in 2012, how the internet has impacted that and seeing how things move really fast. Things are cool for five days, and then move on; so we’ve got to stay relevant and we do that by putting out content.

So your new album is the first on Def Jam, obviously a label with a huge history. Did you feel any pressure because of this?

It’s still only just starting to sink in! I’m so tainted by the music industry now that I’m like “Arrrgh, labels!” But I go over to Def Jam and it’s refreshing, people are smart, young and understand what the music industry is right now. In a collaborative world, there’s no better label to be working with in the world right now.

You mentioned you’ve been working with Pharrell, are there any other collaboration you can tell us about?

Yeah, we’ve got Organized Noize who do a lot of Outkast stuff. Nas and I link back up, Chuck English and I have been working together. From a feature perspective you’ve got Rye Rye, who I love – she’s a little firecracker. We’re just trying to do the right things for the right reasons, there’s a real balance. You know, I’m in the music industry so I need to make sure there is some singles there. Trying to fill that “quota”, achieve that balance; because I’m indie at heart you know?

Is there anyone on your list that you haven’t had the chance to work with yet?

Y’know, I’m a huge fan of K.R.I.T., Theophilus London is great, M.I.A. Then there’s the Bruce Springsteen’s and Stevie Wonder’s of the world, people who I look up to. Would I want to make music with them? Obviously, but would it make the best music? I don’t know…
